Leyte cop suspended over e-sabong (Sabong News)
A POLICEMAN in Leyte is facing a 60-day suspension for allegedly engaging and maintaining e-sabong activities in Kananga town.
The Police Regional Office (PRO)-Eastern Visayas identified the suspect as Staff Sergeant Jeffrey Cabelin.
“Following the specific instructions of the chief of Philippine National Police against erring personnel, I am giving stern warning to every police officer under my watch,” said Brigadier General Bernard Banac, police regional director, on the arrest of Cabelin.
“This PRO will not tolerate any wrongdoing of our personnel in the ranks. We will lodge appropriate charges to anyone caught violating our laws and internal rules and regulations,” Banac added.
In the information released by the police regional command, Cabelin’s alleged e-sabong activity was raided by the elements of Kananga Municipal Police Station and elements of Leyte Police Provincial Office.
Although Cabelin was not present during the raid, a case for violation of Presidential Decree 1602, or illegal gambling, was filed against him, together with his brother.
“An administrative case of grave misconduct was filed against said PNP personnel. Such is subject for issuance of certificate of finality after the prescribed reglementary period, without filing of motion for reconsideration on the part of the respondent,” the police regional command said.
Cabelin received the decision on February 21, 2022.
Meanwhile, Banac urged the public “not to hesitate on reporting similar involvement of police officers in their nearby communities as such will be dealt with accordingly.”
