It was a day for double celebration for Letran’s big man Jeo Ambohot as he got drafted as Converge’s third overall pick in the PBA Rookie Draft all while helping the Knights inch closer to their 19th NCAA crown following their 68-63 Game 1 win against Mapua in the Season 97 Finals on Sunday, May 15.
Ambohot still couldn’t believe that he was finally drafted to the PBA as the third pick.
“Di rin ako makapaniwala eh. Kanina ko lang din nalaman, sinabi sa akin ng mga coaches,” said Ambohot who received the good news just moments after the Knights pulled off the stunning come-from-behind win and drew first blood in their best-of-three affair against the Cardinals.
The 6-foot-6 forward had to skip the draft ceremonies due to the finals match but it was all worth it as he delivered the clutch basket that gave Letran its first taste of the lead, 63-62, after trailing for the majority of the game.
He sank a well-contested floater with 45 seconds left as part of the Knights’ blazing 10-1 finishing kick. Ambohot wound up with just six points but collared 13 boards along with two blocks and a steal.
The lanky big man who will join fellow NCAA star and fourth overall pick Justin Arana in the FiberXers, admitted that he still has a lot to improve in his game but stressed he is ready to learn under the wings of his future coaches including two-time league MVP and assistant coach Danny Ildefonso who was heavily credited to the development of the PBA’s premiere bigs in June Mar Fajardo, Abu Tratter and Vic Manuel.
“Siguro kailangang mag-improve pa ako pero alam ko naman na tutulungan naman ako ng mga veterans do’n tsaka ng mga coaches. Ineexpect ko naman na tutulungan ako doon pero kailangan ko pa rin talaga mag-trabaho.”
