Every May, the Philippines celebrates the Santacruzan, which puts in the spotlight its devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Young Filipinas called sagalas grace the streets dressed in their most elegant as they represent Marian figures and other biblical characters under floral-decorated arches. This procession tells the story of how Queen Helena, the mother of Eastern Roman Emperor Constantine, found the Holy Cross during a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. The procession depicts Queen Helena (or Reina Elena) holding a crucifix and accompanied by her young son. They are joined in the procession by other women who represent other important biblical characters like Queen Esther, Veronica, Mary Magdalene, and others.
As time passes, this traditional event became an avenue for Filipino fashion creatives to demonstrate their craft by making the most elaborate garbs and ternos, ultimately, creating a display that is all about local artistry and the beauty of the Filipina. This is how Binibining Pilipinas kicks off its pageant activities.
On May 14, 40 Binibining Pilipinas 2022 candidates paraded around Araneta City donning elaborate Filipiniana-inspired gowns in their corresponding religious titles. Joining them are the pageant’s reigning queens and Miss International 2005 Lara Quigaman.
