Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas turned emotional after seeing the volunteers during his visit at the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) Command Center at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) in Manila on Thursday, May 12.
Villegas expressed his admiration to the volunteers, who were composed mostly of the youth, stating that they are heroes. He also highlighted the importance of their role in the poll watchdog’s unofficial parallel count.
“PPCRV volunteers, hindi namin kayo pwedeng bayaran. Di namin kayo kayang bayaran (we cannot pay you. We cannot pay you) because only God can pay you,” he said.
“God knows your sacrifices and the Lord knows everything, and the Lord knows the good hearts of these young people,” he added.
He also mentioned how they’re so young yet they’re so heroic and generous which really touched and inspired him.
Villegas added that the volunteers are role models for Filipinos. Being “heroes among us” he commended the fact that they are selfless, dedicated and hardworking.
“I’m very grateful that they have PPCRV volunteers,” he said.
Meanwhile, in his message to the upcoming administration, Villegas called on the next government to serve God and to serve God by loving the country. He also asked them to love the country by embracing both the poor and the youth.
