The national women’s football team conceded a second half goal before suffering a 2-1 defeat at the hands of defending champion and host Vietnam Wednesday, May 11 in the 31st Southeast Asian Games.
Tran Thi Thuy Trang scored the eventual winner in the 50th minute as the Filipinas couldn’t sustain their early lead before a packed crowd at the Cam Pha Stadium in Quang Ninh.
Tahnai Annis produced the opener for the Philippines 14 minutes into the match, but Vietnam equalized in the 38th courtesy fo Nguyen Thi Tuyet Dung’s goal off a scramble.
Coach Alen Stajcic’s side ended its Group A assignment with three points in two matches, but will need the help of the same Vietnamese side to progress into the semis.
Vietnam is slated to play Cambodia on Saturday, with a draw or win sending the Pinay squad to the last four.
Malea Cesar’s long pass allowed Annis to produce a header past Vietnamese keeper Lai Thi Tuyet to make it 1-0 for the Philippines.
The Philippines thwarted several times attempts by Vietnam to tie things up, but that didn’t last long as Dung rebounded a deflected shot that went past goalie Olivia McDaniel, sending the crowd in a frenzy.
Dung’s short pass inside the box allowed Trang to put Vietnam in front, beating Quinley Quezada and Hali Long before converting a right-footed attempt.
