Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes took to social media Thursday, May 5 to explain the absence of Dwight Ramos, Robert Bolick and Japeth Aguilar in the
for the Vietnam Southeast Asian Games.
Reyes said Ramos will remain in Japan to complete his B.League duties with the Toyama Grouses, Bolick had to visit his father in the United States while Aguilar has yet to recover from a calf injury which he suffered during the PBA Governors’ Cup.
“Dwight still has obligations with his team in Japan, so he begged off, as did Robert who had to fly to the US to be with his ailing father; while Japeth’s calf injury is still not 100%” Reyes tweeted.
Ramos, Bolick and Aguilar were part of the 16-man Gilas pool announced by Reyes last March.
But Ramos has been in Japan since concluding his Gilas duties in FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers last February, though his maiden season with the Grouses will end this weekend against Levanga Hokkaido.
Bolick was also part of Gilas in the FIBA window played at the Smart Araneta Coliseum which was Reyes’ first competition since he was brought back to call the shots for Gilas.
Aguilar suffered the injury during Barangay Ginebra San Miguel’s semifinal series against NLEX. The athletic big man missed six games before returning during the finals,
during the Gin Kings’ title-clinching series against the Meralco Bolts.
Reyes will go with June Mar Fajardo, brothers Kiefer and Thirdy Ravena, Matthew Wright, RR Pogoy, Kevin Alas, Troy Rosario, Mo Tautuaa, Isaac Go, Kib Montalbo, Will Navarro and LeBron Lopez as the Filipinos seek a record-extending 19th gold in men’s basketball.
