Kim Kardashian definitely knows how to fire up the Met Gala carpet. After her intriguing all-black Balenciaga ensemble last year, the reality TV star channels the style of Marilyn Monroe by wearing the bombshell’s iconic dress from 1962. She even dyed her hair blonde to complete the look.
The risque dress crafted by French-born costume designer Jean Louis is infamously remembered by many as the piece the late Hollywood actress wore when she sang “Happy Birthday” to then US President John F. Kennedy (JFK).
“The idea really came to me after the gala in September last year. I thought to myself, what would I have done for the American theme if it had not been the Balenciaga look? What’s the most American thing you can think of? And that’s Marilyn Monroe,” Kim says to
. “For me, the most Marilyn Monroe moment is when she sang ‘Happy Birthday,’ to JFK, it was that look.”
According to
, the dress “has been on display at Ripley’s Believe It or Not museum in Orlando, Fla. since its purchase in 2016 for a whopping $4.81 million, a price that makes it one of the most expensive dresses ever sold.” For the event, Kim is assisted by a conservationist from Ripley’s to put on the dress, which she’s only allowed to wear for a few minutes, as per Vogue.
