The PBA Board of Governors has reaffirmed its confidence in the leadership of Ricky Vargas after reelecting the TNT Tropang Giga representative as its chairman for the fifth straight term during the league’s annual planning session in Boracay over the weekend.
Terrafirma Dyip Governor Bobby Rosales also kept his post as the board’s vice chairman while Phoenix Super LPG’s Raymond Zorrilla was elected as the treasurer. Atty. Melvin Mendoza will also be part of the executive committee as the corporate secretary and legal counsel.
Vargas along with Rosales and Zorrilla are expected to announce the league plans for its upcoming 47th season in an online press conference on Wednesday.
“The board had a successful planning session, and the league is excited to execute the plans and programs crafted, looking forward to sustain whatever momentum we’ve got noong makabalik laro tayo in front of the fans in the last Governors’ Cup,” said PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial who will also be serving his fifth term as the league head.
Last season, the league gained some sense of normalcy during games as it saw a steady increase in its gate attendance since it reopened its doors to the fans.
It reached a peak at 20,224 fans in attendance during the Game 6 of the season-ending Governors’ Cup that featured the fourth finals clash between Ginebra San Miguel and Meralco, the biggest in any sporting event in the pandemic era.
“We are all hoping derechong makabangon at makabawi ang ating bansa mula sa hagupit ng pandemya. The PBA, for our part, will do our best na makapagbigay kasiyahan sa Filipino basketball fans,” Marcial added.
The PBA 47th Season is set to open in June while the season’s rookie draft will be happening on May 15.
