Type in your name in Google and see how much information there is available. You might be surprised to find how much is out there, including phone numbers, email addresses, and even your physical home address, more than enough information for attackers to use.
As part of improving privacy and fighting off fraud, Google is updating its content removal program by allowing you to request the removal of certain content about you. These are physical and email addresses, phone numbers, and login credentials. This extends to government IDs, bank accounts, credit card numbers, images of handwritten signatures, and confidential records such as medical records.
The list of requirements for Google to remove content can be found
. Do check it out.
Google will still have to review each request though and matters of public record won’t be removed.
This update doesn’t protect your information 100%. A dedicated attacker may still be able to find ways to navigate around the web to collect your data. But this new policy would be able to protect you from attackers who are hoping to get information from a quick and easy Google search.
