Aside from gracing the Grand Coronation Night of Miss Universe Philippines 2022, reigning Miss Universe 2021 Harnaaz Sandhu will also be busy in the country with activities for causes that are close to her heart. One of the first things she will be doing on Monday, April 25 is to lead a forum on period pains and safe menstrual practices for women.
The event, to be held in a hotel in Pasay City, is entitled, “
outh representatives from all over the country will take part in the forum which is organized by Plan International Philippines and Miss Universe Organization in partnership with DBB Mudra Group, Changing Our World Inc., and Jayaashree Industries.
It was last March when Miss Universe 2021 announced the launch of her own menstrual equity coalition in her home country of India. The coalition consists of giants in the menstrual equity and non-profit space. The goal is to achieve menstrual equity for 5 million women and girls in India by 2025.
Organizers said bringing in a high profile personality like Harnaaz will hopefully eliminate socio-cultural taboos on the issue of menstruation and periods. The event aims to spark positive change to ensure girls and women have access to menstrual products – sanitary pads and soaps – so that they can adopt safe menstrual practices.
Improving menstrual health and tackling period-shame will enhance girls’performance in school, break down misconceptions around menstruation, raise girls’ self-esteem and enable girls to fully participate in all aspects of society, Plan International said.
During the forum, youth participants are expected to present to Miss Universe 2021 the issues and concerns regarding Menstrual Hygiene Management and Menstrual Equity in their communities. Proposed solutions to address the problems will be discussed.
