The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), on Thursday, April 21, said that it recently established its first seismic station in the province of Iloilo.
The said station, which is also the 115th seismic station in the country, is located at Central Azucarera de San Antonio Inc. (CASA) sugarcane plantation in Barangay Ponong Pequeño, Dueñas.
“With the addition of the Dueñas Iloilo Seismic Station (DUIP) to the Philippine Seismic Network (PSN), the monitoring capability of the Institute is further enhanced,” said Phivolcs in a press statement.
The establishment of an additional seismic station allows faster and accurate issuance of earthquake information to quake responders and the general public, said Phivolcs.
“The improved determination of earthquake parameters and detectability of seismic events will be important inputs for earthquake disaster preparedness and risk reduction,” it furthered.
Meanwhile, the onsite inauguration of the newly-built seismic station will be held on April 28.
