Presidential aspirant Senator Manny Pacquiao on Wednesday barged into Ilocos Norte, the bailiwick of his rival, election frontrunner Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., where he was warmly welcomed by supporters, casting doubt on the notion of a “Solid North.”
Starting with a little crowd that greeted him upon his arrival at Laoag City International Airport, Pacquiao said he was surprised that the crowd of Ilocanos wanting him to win grew more as he moved eastward during his motorcade.
“Hindi ko inexpect na ganito kadami ‘yung tao na sasalubong sakin at nagulat nga ako dahil sa ganito karami sa balwarte ni Bongbong. Dito nakumpirma na hindi solid and north kay Bongbong (I didn’t expect the crowd to welcome me to be this huge. I was surprised because it is Marcos Jr.’s bailiwick. This only proves that Solid North is not really solid for Marcos Jr.),” he asserted.
The lawmaker is the first non-local presidential bet to brave the den of Marcos Jr., the “tiger of the north.” This came as he continued his campaign rally after a week of hiatus during the Holy Week.
But upon his arrival in San Nicolas town for his grand rally, Pacquiao’s crowd waned as supporters did not fill the municipal plaza.
There, he recalled his experience of getting out of poverty, which he said he wants other Filipinos to achieve.
