The national women’s football team walloped Fiji, 7-2, Thursday, April 7 in their first of two friendly matches at the Western Sydney Wanderers training ground in Sydney, Australia.
Team captain Tahnai Annis, birthday girl Quinley Quezada and Anicka Castaneda each scored twice as the lady booters prevailed amid rainy conditions in their first match since the semifinals fo the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in India last February.
Dominique Randle also joined the goalscoring tally in the match that served as part of the team’s lengthy training camp as part of preparations for next month’s Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Coach Alen Stajcic admitted there’s still plenty of things left to be desired, especially with the squad being off for two months.
“The result was one thing but we’re looking at our performance,” said Stajcic. “There were some good patches, some good moments but we were a bit rusty in some parts just because players were out for two months, not training in a team environment. Overall, it’s a good starting point for us.
“We were a bit rusty on the ball as the match wore on. That’s just a result of a couple of months out and just four to five days of training. But we’ll be working hard to ensure we get back to the levels where we were during the Asian Cup,” he added.
The two teams will meet again Monday at the same pitch.
