Presidential candidate Senator Panfilo M. Lacson on Thursday, April 7 supported calls to exempt teachers’ election honoraria from taxes.
‘’It is the least that the government can give them as incentive for the extra and thankless – yet patriotic – duty,’’ Lacson said in a statement.
“There is no time to lose for the agencies concerned to act on the matter. Our teachers who are going on election duty deserve no less,’’ he added.
The Department of Education (DepEd) earlier said it is supporting the call of public school teachers to exempt from taxes their election duties.
DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones said they have appealed for the removal o the 20 percent tax on election service honoraria so teachers can get paid in full.
However, Briones said the decision is not theirs to make as it is up to Congress to amend the current tax laws.
DepEd Undersecretary Alain Pascua said the Internal Revenue Code must be amended to allow such tax exemption.
