Xyrus Torres made sure to step up for Far Eastern University this time and that nobody will be left behind with a victory.
The Far Eastern University forward did not disappoint as he dropped a career-high 26 points on an efficient 9-of-18 shooting including eight three-pointers to power the Tamaraws past the University of the East Red Warriors, 88-74, in the UAAP Season 84 men’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena Tuesday, April 5.
Torres deflected the credits to his fellow Tamaraws and cited the win as a total team effort as FEU bounced back from a tough 73-68 loss to National University.
Torres pointed out that RJ Abarrientos’ 33-point outing last game went into naught due to the lack of presence from his teammates, including himself.
Satisfied with the results, Torres said the Tamaraws responded to the demands of head coach Olsen Racela.
“Masaya syempre kasi hindi lang ako ‘yong nag-contribute na para makuha ko ‘tong game na ‘to,” said Torres. “Syempre nagpapasalamat din ako sa mga teammates and coaches ko na binibigay na trust sa akin, sa game ko. Ginawa ko lang talaga ‘yong role ko.”
FEU’s problems were addressed after an intimate talk to assure that a different outcome will yield for the Tamaraws.
Abarrientos struggled from the field as he shot only one field goal out of 13 attempts and was limited to two points with five assists.
“Siguro nag-prepare talaga kami as a team. Noong last three games, medyo masama ‘yong game na alam naming kayang manalo pero sa bandang huli bumitaw kami,” added Torres.
“Kailangan naming maging consistent at nag-usap usap kami as a team, nag-open [up] kami sa isa’tn isa. ‘Yon lang, ginawa lang namin ‘yong role namin kanina… para mali ng isa, mali ng lahat.”
