Petro Gazz outlasted a pesky Cignal, 25-21, 28-26, 15-25, 25-21, Monday night to clinch the remaining championship berth in the Premier Volleyball League Open Conference at The Arena in San Juan City.
Still in cloud nine from their come-from-behind 25-22, 21-25, 22-25, 26-24, 18-16 Game 2 win Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena, the Angels did not waste time getting back to work for their third finals appearance.
Aiza Pontillas and Myla Pablo pumped in 17 points apiece but Petro Gazz drew strength from veteran setter Chie Saet all throughout in surviving their best-of-three semifinals affair.
The 37-year-old setter converted 36 excellent sets on top of four points, including crucial plays in the crunch.
“Pinaghirapan namin to kahit maiksi lang ang preparation namin,” a teary-eyed Saet said during postgame interview.
“Pero matured na yung team, hindi na ganung kahirap mag-adjust.”
Saet delivered the set victories in the first and second with her drop shots as Petro Gazz gained the upperhand.
Cignal refused to give up the fight and quickly controlled the third-set tempo, before Petro Gazz’s fourth-set composure spelled the difference.
A back row attack from Gretchel Soltones and a service ace from Pablo sealed the win for Petro Gazz as they arranged a best-of-three final with Creamline starting on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
