Robi Nayve nailed a gutsy three-pointer with 55 seconds left to lift College of St. Benilde, 76-71 over Arellano and score its second straight win in the NCAA Season 97 on Saturday, April 2 at the La Salle Green Hills Gym.
Coming off a 17-point performance in the Blazers’ 79-68 win over Lyceum Pirates last Tuesday, Nayve unloaded another stellar outing, finishing with 19 points powered by a 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc.
He also nailed a crucial triple over the outstretched arms of Kalen Doromal which proved to be the difference in the tight contest as it gave the Blazers the lead, 73-70.
Jet Publico had the chance to seal the game but split his pressure-packed free throws with 19 seconds left. The Blazers though clamped down on the defensive end as JC Cullar completed a steal to which Publico converted into a layup to take the win for Benilde
“I’ve really trusted Robi a lot. He really emerged as the leader in the bubble namin and he really showed that leadership which I am happy about. He’s always been a good defensive player so now it’s just a matter of giving him opportunities to shine,” Blazers head coach Charles Tiu said of Nayve after the game.
Will Gozum had his best game so far for Benilde with his first double-double display of 17 points and 15 rebounds including the two big baskets down the stretch, shoving the lead back to the Blazers, 67-64 after the Chiefs took the driver’s seat since their 2-0 lead in the opening frame.
Kobe Caballero paced Arellano with 15 points while Justin Arana, who returned after missing Arellano’s last game due to a knee injury, still finished with a double-double of 14 points and 16 rebounds.
Benilde zoomed to fourth spot of the standing with a 2-1 record while Arellano, after a solid debut against San Sebastian last March 27, has now lost two straight games for a 1-2 win-loss slate.
