The UAAP is set to welcome limited spectators at the Mall of Asia Arena beginning Tuesday, April 5.
UAAP president Nonong Calanog of host De La Salle and executive director Atty. Rebo Saguisag confirmed the development in a statement Friday, April 1.
Calanog said the league had consulted with its bio-security officers, the Commission on Higher Education, and the local government unit of Pasay City before deciding to welcome fans back and maximizing the Alert Level 1 status in Metro Manila.
“Our priority is the health and safety of our student athletes and minimizing the risks of Covid-19. After discussions with our health officers and putting a few additional protocols in place, we are now ready to have fans back in the arena. The UAAP is a competition best experienced with students and alumni supporting their respective schools,” said Calanog.
Saguisag, for his part, said having fans back in the venue is a “significant step back to normalcy” for the league.
Tournament officials, players, and staff, however, will remain in a bubble setup.
“We appreciate the sacrifices of individuals and the member-schools in keeping their respective bubbles intact which has led us to this point of having fans back in the stands.”
Ticket selling begins Saturday, April 2 while students are encouraged to buy their tickets at the MOA Arena to avail of a discount. Fans, however, will be required to present a vaccination card and a valid ID upon entry.
A health screening process will also be conducted before entering the venue. Designated dining areas will be available but eating and drinking are prohibited inside the event bowl.
University of Santo Tomas and De La Salle will set the pace at the 10 a.m. curtain-raiser, University of the Philippines and Adamson will battle it out at the 1 p.m. encounter, Far Eastern University and University will clash at the 4 p.m. match, and National University and Ateneo will cap the quadruple-header at 7 p.m.
