Arellano got a sigh of relief as Justin Arana’s knee injury was downgraded to an ACL sprain following a second opinion on his MRI results on Wednesday morning, March 30.
The initial diagnosis on Arana’s injury was a partial anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear with torn on the meniscus which would sideline him for a couple of months and an abrupt end to the NCAA career of the 6-foot-5 center who is currently in his last playing year with Arellano.
A review on the same MRI result revealed that the injury on his right knee was just an ACL sprain and would only need a couple of weeks of physical therapy before he can finally rejoin the team.
Although there’s no timetable yet for his return, Arana was thrilled by the possibility of returning to the lineup and still finish his NCAA career on a good note.
“Sobrang saya ko kanina kasi akala ko talaga na tapos na yung career ko sa NCAA tapos ayun nalaman ko yung sabi ng doctor na pwede pa pala ako bumalik,” said Arana during the interview with Game On in between the NCAA double-header games on Wednesday.
“Yung recover ko talaga yun yung pinaka importante kailangan maging 100-percent muna ako bago maglaro kasi mahirap na bumalik yung injury lalo na ngayon last year ko pa so kailangan ko rin talaga maging fully healthy rin talaga,” said Arana.
Arana went down with the apparent injury with 1:49 left in the Chiefs’ 65-63 win over San Sebastian in their first game in the season last Sunday. He finished with 16 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks.
The reigning Defensive Player of the Year was badly missed in Arellano’s 96-67 loss at the hands of the defending champions Letran earlier.
