If elected president this May, Senator Manny Pacquiao will put behind bars former First Lady Imelda Marcos, the mother of his Palace race rival Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
“Walang exemption basta convicted ka sa Supreme Court (SC), sa korte natin, susundin natin (There will be no exemptions. If you’re convicted by the SC by a court, we will follow the ruling),” Pacquiao told reporters on the sidelines of a religious gathering in Pasig City on Sunday night.
The lawmaker’s pronouncement came after he was asked if the 89-year-old former First Lady and Ilocos Norte congresswoman would be among the corrupt officials he would run after if he wins the presidency.
In 2018, the Sandiganbayan Fifth Division found Imelda guilty of seven counts of graft due to “financial interests and participation in the management of private foundations in Switzerland”. She was sentenced to six years and 1 month to 11 years for each of the seven counts.
In the same year, Imelda posted bail and was granted provisional liberty, which she enjoys up to now.
If Imelda merits jail time, Pacquiao, who is known for his anti-corruption stance, said: “We will implement it.”
But in an interview with reporters in Manila on Monday, March 23, Pacquiao added that he might still put into consideration Imelda’s age.
“Mga ganyang edad…hindi ko siguro sya ihahalo sa kulungan. Separate na lang siguro sya (Considering her age, I might not mix her with other prisoners. I might separate her from them),” he said of the 92-year-old.
