Ahead of the start of the campaign for local candidates, Pateros Mayor Miguel Ponce III urged the public to follow minimum public health standards to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has set the start of campaign period for local candidates on March 25 until May 7.
Under Comelec Resolution 10730, candidates for congressman, and regional, provincial, city and municipal elective positions can campaign during the period.
Ponce hopes that people will get their booster shots before joining local campaign sorties and reminded them to wear face masks and observe social distancing.
“We are not yet finished with our battle against the pandemic, that is why everyone should stay safe. I remind everyone on the proper wearing of face masks, for people to wear them all the time, especially this time that the campaign for national [candidates] has started and the campaign for local [candidates] will start on March 25,” said Ponce during a live broadcast on Facebook on March 19.
He added, “We cannot prevent you from joining campaigns of candidates, we cannot prevent you from attending house-to-house [campaigns], caucus meetings. But it will be good if you have booster shots when you attend and observe minimum health standards. First and foremost is the wearing of face masks, social distancing and regular handwashing.”
The mayor said the number of Covid-19 cases in neighboring countries is increasing. He cited the case of South Korea, which has recorded record numbers of daily new cases, averaging more than 300,000 per day in the last seven days.
“China has locked down many areas and the same thing is happening in Japan. There are many countries that are experiencing a surge in Covid-19 cases. That is why we should be careful. It will be very hard if we go back to our problem where we need to do tests, isolate and contact tracing. I hope we will not go back to this [situation],” said Ponce.
The national and local elections will be held on May 9.
