Team captain John Vic De Guzman and the rest of the Philippine men’s volleyball team will make the most out of their training camp in Qatar beginning next week.
“We’re very excited this coming March 24 pagpunta namin sa Qatar,” said De Guzman as the national team gears up for the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi, Vietnam in May.
“Kasi iba na ‘yong goal namin this SEA Games. Nakapag-silver kami noong 2019 and this coming SEA Games siyempre ang pinaka-goal natin it to get the gold medal.”
In the 2019 edition, the Philippine men’s volleyball squad made history after bagging its first silver medal in the biennial meet since 1977 in Kuala Lumpur.
Indonesia ruled the 2019 SEA Games while Thailand followed suit at third place.
“Hopefully, itong training camp namin sa Qatar maging stepping stone siya at marami kaming matutunan,” said De Guzman.
“Alam naman namin na ‘yong mga [players ng] Qatar teams ang tatangkad nila. So malaking experience ‘yong makukuha namin sa kanila.”
De Guzman added that the team, under the tutelage of head coach Dante Alinsunurin, is focusing more on the defensive department along with adjustments in attacks and blocking.
Meanwhile, the national team is still awaiting the services of two main gunners in Bryan Bagunas and Marck Espejo, who have prior commitments in their respective teams in Japan’s V.League.
