Presidential aspirant Senator Manny Pacquiao on Thursday, March 18 urged the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to ensure the integrity of the upcoming May polls after his fellow lawmakers confirmed an earlier breach of the voters’ information.
Pacquiao in a statement said the poll body must clear even the slightest doubt of the people and assure them of the integrity of the conduct of this year’s elections.
“It’s hard if the people have doubts,” he said in Filipino.
On Thursday, Senators Imee Marcos and Vicente “Tito” Sotto III confirmed that there was “indeed a security breach” in the operations of the Comelec’s service contractor, Smartmatic, which the latter denied.
Marcos also said the data breach compromises “the processes and operations of Smartmatic in very serious ways”.
With this, Pacquiao said the poll body must learn how to further protect the conduct of the elections.
“So they cannot be penetrated by the syndicates and attack especially the machines that they will be using,” he added.
