March is women’s month. All biases aside, there must be a reason why a full month is devoted to celebrating women. After all, in a world that tends to be so busy, our strength, tenacity, resilience, care, compassion and nurturing among many other traits sometimes goes unnoticed. In other words, even we women are guilty of overlooking the celebration of women in our lives, and the important roles that they play. In fact, at times, we too doubt our own self-worth.
Regardless of the role a woman plays – from being a housewife, to a front liner, an executive, an entrepreneur, business owner, government official, the list goes on – she undoubtedly plays a major role in holding and running the turf.
Women are responsible for making things happen. And though community structure may sometimes pose societal stratifications, the role of a woman is consistent in perpetuating success.
I was blessed to have been raised in a very matriarchal family – I have known strong women all my life, and was raised by some of the strongest and most steadfast I know, and will ever know. I attribute the security and confidence I have as a woman today to my upbringing, and because of that, I have never felt inferior to men – in school, in the workplace, or in society.
Rather, I have always believed in the saying that “behind every successful man is a woman.” Regardless of whether that woman is at the forefront of cheerleading, or behind the scenes encouraging, I do believe that the inspiration and motivation a woman is able to provide a man, or those around her is unparalleled. And this is the very same reason that we, as women, must make that conscious effort to raise our sons to respect and value the [most important] women in their lives.
“I will not have panic and tears. I will be calm and confident. My children are looking at me. I will be next to them and next to my husband, and with you.” These were the words of Olena Zelenska, Ukraine’s first lady upon the invasion of Russia. As I read these words, my sentiment about women’s roles in the lives of men (and in the greater community) were reaffirmed. Here is a woman who is literally running away from missiles, but at the same time sacrificing her comfort by accepting the greater role her husband (and she as well for that matter) has to play, endangering his own life, for the sake of their country. To stay composed and forego emotional decisions in the midst of adversity is not only a true sign of strength, but one of tenacity and resilience as well. Knowing her husband’s role as a leader, Olena’s selflessness is not only a source of strength for her husband, but serves as an unwavering example to the many women who have had to sacrifice for the sake of others. Perhaps unknown to her, she serves as an inspiration to so many.
And so as women, may we never allow anyone to make us feel inferior because of our gender. May we continue to shatter the glass ceiling in whatever path we choose to take in life. May we educate and nurture the next generation not only to do the same, but to strengthen the role of women in the community even more.
“Here’s to strong women. May we know them, may we be them, may we raise them.” – Unknown
