In 1945, KARL STORZ started producing ENT (ear, throat, nose) instruments, headlamps, and binocular loupes under his company. This led him to expand his medical vision into exploring equipment that can assist doctors in checking inside one’s body. It’s been over 75 years since KARL STORZ’s introduced the concept of harnessing generated bright light through a flexible fiber-optic light cable, or what we now refer to as “cold light illumination.” This has helped many physicians in their endoscopy procedures over the years.
With over 400 patents and utility models to date, the family-owned German company has helped make minimally invasive surgery easier and faster for doctors, thereby operating with less pain for the patient and least damage to the body. Complications are also avoided, making endoscopic procedures related to cancer, liver tumors, obesity, he, stomach, colorectal, and others less terrifying for the patient and their concerned family members. Other benefits include small incisions, low risk of infection, short hospital stay, quick recovery time, less scarring, and reduced blood loss.
In 2016, Karl Storz opened a local office in Bonifacio Global City, Philippines. With its mission of making Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) readily available to those in need, KARL STORZ Endoscopy Philippines, Inc. aims to save more lives by working with Chinese General Hospital and Medical Center (CGHMC) at a partnership level with managed operating room (OR) concept.
This managed OR concept is an equipment and services solution that brings the latest KARL STORZ offering in the Philippines. This program aims to provide the hospital latest technology OR equipment without capital investment. KARL STORZ will also be responsible for maintaining these equipment, including providing on-site endoscopic specialists and hence ensuring that they are in excellent condition to provide the best surgical outcome for patients. Held last Mar. 1 2:00 p.m. at the Boracay function room of Shangri-la EDSA hotel, representatives from both companies were present to witness the contract signing of the partnership. The event, entitled “Seeing Surgery in a Different Light,” ushered in guests such as Executive Vice President, Global Sales and Marketing, Mr. Thorsten Molitor from Tuttlingen, Germany, Country Manager Eshwarahally Vikas of Karl Storz Endosopy Philippines, Inc. From CGHMC, Medical Director and Department of Surgery Chairman, Dr. Samuel Ang, and, Head of Minimally Invasive Surgery and Assistant Chairman of the Department of Surgery Dr. Sammy Cunanan were also present. There were also notable guests from the Philippine Chinese Charitable Association, Inc., such as Chairman of the Board Mr. Antonio Tan, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Mr. Kelly Hun Sia, and Chairman Emeritus and Chairman Executive Committee Dr. Benito Goyokpin.
“We are proud that since the start of the partnership, CGHMC has become the number one hospital in the country in terms of the number of MIS cases in general surgery,” says Vikas as the very first speaker to go on stage. “Managed OR concept frees up the valuable financial and manpower resource toward patient care rather than managing the equipment. With this unique program, KARL STORZ will provide CGHMC with the latest models of camera systems and MIS medical instruments on a continuous basis,” referring to the partnership.
