There’s something nostalgic about turning 60. It’s a landmark, one that should remind you of the good old days while also looking forward to the next chapter of your life. It’s a combination of passion, dedication, and excitement.
The same can be said for the Technological Institute of the Philippines (T.I.P.). Since its inception in 1962, this premier engineering and computing school – founded by Engr. Demetrio A. Quirino and Dr. Teresita U. Quirino – have made great strides in bringing the benefits of higher education to the masses.
“If you think about it, we have the best of both worlds: the wisdom accumulated over the past years, complemented with the passion and drive of a young person still eager to prove oneself,” said T.I.P. President Dr. Elizabeth Quirino-Lahoz.
For its 60th anniversary, T.I.P. puts the spotlight on blended learning. The institution is set to resume limited face-to-face classes after two full years of remote education due to the pandemic. But even then, T.I.P. has already been supplementing traditional classroom discussions with online assessment activities – thanks to its robust IT infrastructure.
Named fifth top school for engineering research by the Institutes for Research, Innovation, and Scholarship (IRIS), T.I.P. continues to mold lifelong learners, problem solvers, and innovators with 20 programs accredited by the ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) and Computing Accreditation Commission (CAC), 16 programs recognized by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) as Centers of Excellence and Centers of Development, and several more accolades.
Its graduates are now contributing to society at large, some of whom have even come full circle in their journey as a T.I.P.ian.
“I’m just happy to be here. It feels good to go back and teach at the institution that once cradled you,” shared T.I.P. humanities instructor Abegail Magno.
Efren Chavez, who has been with T.I.P.’s chemical engineering department for 15 years, said he’ll always be a “proud alumnus and faculty member.”
The school may have already reached seniority in terms of age, but it’s still very much alive and kicking. Retirement is nowhere in sight for this 60-year-old education veteran bent on uplifting the lives of the Filipino youth. With grit and determination – values it has long upheld since the beginning – T.I.P. is sure to conquer anything the new normal may bring.
As Dr. Quirino-Lahoz puts it, “there is still so much we can do.”
