Gen. Dionardo Carlos, chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), ordered on Monday, Feb. 28, all police personnel to refrain from playing online sabong (cockfighting) following information that some cops are already buried in debt, the worst is that some of them have already resorted to robbery.
Carlos raised his concerns about the effects of online sabong among PNP personnel, saying there have been police officers, including officials, who were caught hooked on online sabong, the recent was on Sunday when the number four man of the PNP, the Chief of the Directorial Staff, caught a police officer betting using his cellular phone right inside Camp Crame in Quezon City.
“Huwag kayo magalit sa amin. Bilang ama kami po ay naninigurado na hindi kayo mapahamak. Akala niyo ah laro laro lang ito. Eventually what, magkakautang kayo ng P2 million, P3 million at ano gagawin? Manghoholdap? (Don’t get mad at us. As a father (of the PNP), I am just trying to make sure that you will not get addicted. You thought this is just a game? Eventually you would have P2 million or P3 million debt? And then what are you going to do? You will engage in robbery?),” said Carlos.
“That is an addiction. If you are into that we will make sure that you are stop. Henceforth, all field offices, commanders, units, we will inspect all cell phones and other gadgets that may be used. That is an instruction already down the line to the police station,” he added.
On Feb. 18, a police corporal from Oriental MIndoro was caught while robbing a hardware store in Gloria town. He was already slapped with criminal charges and is now facing dismissal from the service. A similar case was reported in Batangas wherein a policeman from Laguna allegedly robbed a gasoline station.
Based on the investigation, the two cops are hooked into online sabong.
Carlos said there were already a number of policemen who are currently being investigated in connection with online sabong addiction.
“There are officers and PNCOs (Police Non-Commissioned Officers) that will be relieved immediately. I gave already the instruction,” he said.
Carlos said that at least three police regional directors have also started taking the lead in the inspection of the cellular phones of their respective personnel.
He then warned all policemen to refrain from betting on online sabong, adding that there are already police teams who are acting on information relayed by concerned citizens about policemen who are addicted to online sabong.
