MRT Negros advanced to the battle for fifth place after sweeping Basilan, 25-20, 25-18, 25-20 in the first round of the classification match of the Philippine National Volleyball Federation Champions League men's division at the Aquamarine Sports Complex on Thursday.
Christian Marcelino led the way for MRT Negros with 15 points on 11 attacks, three blocks, and one service ace.
Jet Nonoy and Matthew Salarzon chipped in six points apiece in the match that lasted for one hour and 20 minutes.
Gadpray Aregado only scored four points for MRT Negros but tallied two crucial points in the third set to finish off the eliminated Steel Spikers.
Basilan, meanwhile, was led by Esmail Kasim who netted 11 points.
With the victory, MRT Negros faces the Sabong International Spikers in the battle for fifth place at 10 a.m. on Friday.
MRT Negros defeated Sabong in their group phase meeting.
The semifinal round also begins on Friday with the Go for Golf-Air Force Aguilas facing Global Remit at 1:30 p.m., and the Team Dasma Monarchs locking horns with Manileño Spikers at 4 p.m. The winners of these matches will clash for the championship.
