MANILA, Philippines — Gambling lords have sought an audience with Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr.
In an interview with dzRH yesterday, Azurin admitted that some gambling lords wanted to meet with him.
“Parang paanyaya po nila kung puwede nila ako makasama sa isang dinner (They were asking if they could invite me to dinner),” Azurin said.
Azurin did not identify the people in the gambling business who wanted to meet with him and their purpose in seeking an audience.
However, themeeting did not materialize due to Azurin’s tight schedule.
Azurin said that small town lottery (STL) is authorized by the government to operate while online or e-sabong is prohibited because of its ill effects on the public.
He said police officers, soldiers and even overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) have incurred debts due to e-sabong.
“Hindi na nakakauwi dahil baon na baon sa utang dahil sa katataya (They can no longer go home because they are mired in debt from placing bets),” he said, referring to the OFWs.
The PNP has also submitted a list of e-sabong websites to the Department of Information and Communications Technology and the National Telecommunications Commission.
“They are the only ones with the authority to take down” the websites, PNP spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo said in a Laging Handa briefing.
