CEBU, Philippines — Retired PNP chief and senatorial aspirant Guillermo Eleazar is not against online sabong as long as this is regulated and its ill-effects are being addressed.
His statement, however, appears in contrast to his personal stand against gambling.
“Personally, ayoko po nang gambling. Kaya may legal at illegal na gambling. Yung sabong nasa kultura na natin yan. Yung sabong hindi mo na matatanggal yan kaya it is much better to regulate it at magkaroon nang revenue yung gobyerno natin,” said Eleazar, who was in Cebu for a three-day campaign sortie.
Eleazar, a Presidential Lingkod Bayan Awardee for Outstanding Government Worker in 2021, visited various local government units in Cebu including Consolacion town and the cities of Talisay, Cebu, Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu.
He remained unperturbed by the latest Pulse Asia survey where he was not among the top 12 senatorial candidates. If given a seat in the Senate, Eleazar said he will push for legislations that is “maka diyos, makatao, at makakikasan.”
Eleazar also vowed to pass legislation on health, and life insurance system for all barangay tanod and medical frontliners in the country; incentive system for security guards who will help in the fight against crimes and work on the longer validity of their licenses; to fight for the independence of the PNP-Internal Affairs Service to punish erring policemen.
He plans to increase the budget for body-worn camera for policemen; strengthen the Anti-Cybercrime Group of PNP to stop online scammers, online sex predators and other cybercrimes and stiffer penalties for cyber criminals.
Eleazar also wanted to get rid of “palakasan” system in the PNP recruitment as well as in other transactions in the government.
He said he wanted the country to have a National Health Hazard map in order to prevent the spread of diseases and effective response by the government as well as pursuing telemedicine as one of the ways for consultations, especially in times of pandemic and disaster. —
